Partly sunny, mostly cloudy, spitting rain, torrential downpour: these are all, at any given moment, in play. But even when the latter, the Durian must get through!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\">\n<div style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\">\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chanthaburi Rain Truck\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;\"  src=\"https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/photos\/7156651142\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">It\u2019s a welcome change after the searing heat of Siem Reap, Bangkok, and Vientiane. When the little breeze kicks in, it\u2019s the absolutely heaven-sent atmospheric condition \u2013 much reminiscent of Hilo Town in this way.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I stepped off the bus, to be immediately greeted by the first of many a downpour to be experienced since my arrival. After waiting for it to settle to a dull roar, walked around a while, and found a charming little hotel right in the middle of town; then promptly et the best Durian of all my born days. Never got <em>that<\/em> one from the Festival, however; but rather from the huge, sprawling Fresh Market just a few blocks from the hotel.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">That set the tone, all right.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The seat of Thailand\u2019s Durian Empire, the province is also in abundance with Snake Fruit (first noticed these in Cambodia; but have not yet tried, as they\u2019re rather pricey), Mangosteen (<em>off the hook<\/em> delicious, and ringing up at 50 cents to the pound!), and Rambutan.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/rambutan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"rambutan\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/rambutan_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"rambutan\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Despite it all, though, the number-one most-favourite delicacy appears\u00a0 to be the same as it is throughout Thailand.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pork.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pork\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/pork_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"pork\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">But, at least at World Durian Festival 2012, the in-season fruit reigns supreme.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/festentrance.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"festentrance\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/festentrance_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"festentrance\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">More vendors than one can shake a stick at, of course. But also a free Thai-fruit buffet, a Durian-eating contest, and lots of floats (literally floating in the lake).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/float.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"float\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/float_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"float\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, why an elephant, or a frog, placed atop a bed of Rambutans?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/frog1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"frog1\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/frog1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"frog1\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Well, why not? See one of the helpful town direction signs.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/townsign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"townsign\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/townsign_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"townsign\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, all of the streetlamps are adorned thus:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/bunny.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"bunny\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/bunny_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"bunny\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">So, a town with a lot going for it; so one would think. But in point of fact, it\u2019s absolutely no aspirations whatever at attracting tourists. The people are just the people, the town just the town; and any sign of a caucasoidal visitor is almost like as good as a alien from Mars.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A good place to experience genuine Thai culture \u2013 but the would-be anthropological visitor soon discovers that while he\u2019s watching them, <em>they\u2019re<\/em> watching <em>him<\/em> as well!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">But they folk&#8217;re damned friendly, they are. Why, just yesterday, a couple drove up on a motorcycle and handed me a bag of Rambutans. A fortuitous event, as, though I cared for them not in Hawaii, I\u2019d been wanting to try some here.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u2026And now I remember why they\u2019re suck-ass. It\u2019s \u2018cause the damned skin of the seed adheres to the flesh, so\u2019s one cannot but eat this frickin\u2019 skin when chowing down the fruit. Bleah. Besides, its flavour is a <em>very<\/em> pale imitation to the almighty Lychee.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">After struggling with a few, I purposed to just re-gift them. This was easier said then done, however. Tried giving these things away all over fucking town, and nobody would take them! Sheesh. <em>Finally<\/em>, the receptionist here at the hotel was happy to have them. He started munching away quite immediately.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Even the free Durian samples have been forthcoming \u2013 from vendors and civilians alike.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Well, one thing I did do yesterday was to help some dudes unload a beverage delivery. So, possibly, word got \u2018round that there\u2019s a Barefoot Farang in town helping out with the manual labour. Maybe that\u2019s because why I later was being gifted with Durian and Rambutan alike? Probably, though, it\u2019s just \u2018cause the people here are just genuinely very friendly.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I did receive some pretty funny \u201cadvice\u201d, whilst down by the river lunching a huge quantity of Mongosteens. A fisherman stopped by to shoot the shit for a little while; assuming that I would soon be on my way to one of the islands.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I corrected him that I\u2019m here in town for the Festival. It at first didn\u2019t register, but when I added \u201cDurian\u201d, he became quite animated indeed, warning me not to eat any more. See, \u2018cause if one mixes Durian with whiskey (or so he says), it\u2019s curtains. And, \u201cYou don\u2019t need to die.\u201d Huhn, the possibility of abstaining from <em>whiskey<\/em> rather than from the King Of Fruits had apparently not crossed his mind.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Anyhow, it\u2019s presumably the absence of any touristic pretensions which gives the town its charm. I\u2019d say, \u201cI love this place \u2013 except for the goddam traffic.\u201d But here, the goddam traffic seems to be essential to the people\u2019s beings.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I mean to say, that while motorcycles are inescapably annoyingly numerous throughout Asia; here in Chanthaburi, it\u2019s as though they\u2019re not just a tool to get from place to place, but instead a <em>very extension<\/em> of one\u2019s self. As if, were a townsperson to be separated from his or her bike for more than a few moments\u2019 time, certain death would swiftly ensue.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Can\u2019t put my finger on it; it\u2019s just the feeling I get. At any rate, there\u2019s <em>something<\/em> just a little bit off, just a little bit goofily weird \u2013 even by Thai standards \u2013 about the people here. Quite endearingly so, let me hasten to ad.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">One can see it in the signs and advertisements, for one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/tear.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"tear\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/tear_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"tear\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I like how the raindrop makes it look like she\u2019s a solitary tear running down her face; but even without, don\u2019t you wonder just what\u2019s going on in that phone conversation?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/muslimfood.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"muslimfood\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/muslimfood_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"muslimfood\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I\u2019ve never before heard tell of \u201cMuslim Food\u201d. Probably it means Halal, I guess. Meanwhile, one can\u2019t but hope that this won\u2019t be on the quiz.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/fruit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none;
