The Lyrical Evolution Of The Yip Song

"The Yip Song", from 1993's masterwork Respect, is surely one of Robyn's finest songs. It was first performed, I believe, on February 14th, 1992, in Chicago; and immediately became a staple of Robyn's live set, both with the Egyptians and solo. I would venture to guess that, with the possible exceptions of "I Often Dream Of Trains" and "Queen Of Eyes", it's his most frequently performed song of the '90s. Now, Robyn has always used different --sometimes wildly different-- lyrics live than appear on the albums. But a few things make "The Yip Song" unique in this department.

Whereas on most songs, he'll change the same line or lines when he performs them live, "The Yip Song" -- especially in the early days -- was a jumble. He used more less all the same lyrics (rotating some in or out on any given night), but often in completely different parts of the song. Also, to my knowledge, the song was performed every night of the Egyptians' Winter '92 tour, and, he always introduced it with a background story. I can't think of any other song he's given this treatment to. the song is about the death of Robyn's father, and Raymond Hitchcock died during the middle of the tour. this event surely informed both the stories and the evolving lyrics. (as well as, presumably, the selection of the title Live Death, a promo EP composed of live songs from this tour.)

Gradually, the lyrics did settle down and begin to look more like what was finally recorded for the album. But I find this evolution rather fascinating, and suspect that we'll not see anything like it again. I'd love to include even more versions of the song here. So, if you, or anybody you know, has tapes of any of these February '92 shows, please get in touch with me, and we can set up a trade!

2/14/92 The Vic, Chicago [17th song]
This is a brand new tune. It's called...uh, it's actually not called The Yip Song. It sounds like it is, and it has a reference to a woman in it called Vera Lynn, who in Britain in the, in the uh, war in the '40's, was a very popular singer. And she was nicknamed "The Forces' Sweetheart." And all the soldiers, if they couldn't find any good porno shops, they'd have a picture of her up inside their...turret, as they'd be incinerated over Dresden, or whatever happened to them. And this is, uh...this is from the view of an old man who's...dying now, and uh...he keeps, keeps flashing back. And if you think now, the equivalent would be...for, for you guys in say, fifty years' time, you'd be thinking about, as you were passing away, you'd be thinking about Nine Inch Nails, or something. In your head, you know, you can just go, "Nine Inch Nails," and we'll go, "Vera Lynn." I had a lot of fun writing this. One! Two! Three! Four!

Um, okay, this is called Vera Lynn. Um, which is about an old wartime...performer. Uh, well she's still alive. She's called Vera Lynn. She was called, "The Forces' Sweetheart." Nicknamed that, and all the soldiers, if they couldn't find a good porno shop, they'd use a...picture of Vera pinned up above the...you know, on the side of their tank, as they incinerated in the...North African desert, or whatever. And I was thinking about someone who'd survived the war, but he's dying now. And he, he just looks back to, to Vera Lynn who was his...you know, he listened to when he was a kid. Like someone who listened to Nine Inch Nails now, or something, maybe dying in fifty years' time thinking, "Oh, Nine Inch Nails!" You know? So, this is a, this is a kind of pre-craematorium song, huh! Okay, Minneapolis. Heh ha ha. One! Two! Three! Four!

Uh, gotta explain. This, uh, this song mentions a singer. A woman called Vera Lynn, who was a...big singer, in the war, in Britain. She was, she was really popular. She was like, um...Nirvana, or Nine Inch Nails, or something. She kept everybody warm at night, even when she wasn't with them. If they couldn't get a good porno shop -- they were harder to find in those days. They used to bleach their hairs out, and stuff like that. Animal stuff was right out. And, uh, so they had Vera, although she was very clean and wholesome. And this is a song about somebody who's dying now, and remembers, uh, someone he used to, you know, listen to when he was a kid. So if you wanna imagine now that...that when you're fifty years on and you're passing away, somewhere...uh, you're thinking about Nine Inch Nails. Or whatever. You can put yourself in the context of this song. And it...it's not called "The Yip Song". But it, it sounds like it is. One! Two! Three! Four!

2/23/92 Roseland Theater, Portland [17th song]
This uh...this concerns somebody who is, dying, and they're for about, they're quite old, and they remember somebody they used to listen to when they were young. And the name of the person that they used to listen to is Vera Lynn. And the name, "Vera Lynn" crops up a lot in this next song, 'cause, in this dying person's delirium they keep envisaging this person that they used to listen to years ago. So, uh, if you wanna put yourself in the situation of the person in this song, imagine that you're dying in fifty years' time. And, that you keep thinking about, whatever you listen to. You know, Nirvana, or the Grateful Dead, or something. Nine Inch Nails. And so you're lying there, you know, you're, you're seventy, or seventy-five, or eighty. And you're covered in horrible brown spots, and your teeth have long since disappeared, and your septum may have shriveled up. And your hair is a clotted mass on the back of your head, and you've got tubes poking in and out of your stomach, and you've got an oxygen mask, and a morhpine drip. And on top of that, you've got dead skin on the soles of your feet you can't shave off anymore, 'cause you can't move around to get at them and, clip it away like you used to. You got nasty gunk under your fingernails, that nobody pulls out, 'cause they're all looking so bleak, and they're huddled around your dying bed. They don't actually notice little details like your fingernails. You got a blood-blister that you'll never be able to pop, 'cause you can't move your gums properly anymore. You imagine that, and that's where this song is at. One! Two! Three! Four!

2/26/92 Slim's, San Francisco [17th song]
Morris doesn't have to wipe off as much sweat as us, because, he has fewer toxins in his body. Not because of his metabolism or because of his pores. And he's cool, yeah. Forgot to mention that. Morris is in fact, cool. In case you're wondering which of us it was. One in three people die of cancer, one in three people are cool. Not necessarily the same thing. And on the--
[Andy:] So it's not that, if Morris is cool, then it must be you or me who's got cancer?
[Robyn:] No! No! No! That's a logical error. Yet, but he might not necessarily. (He said, smiling sweetly.) Yeah, you don't know yet, do you? I thought it was, uh, um...benign, anyway, in fact: your lump? Yeah. So now that we're on the subject of surgery: all three of us have had benign growths removed from their, uh, body. Not...well, yeah, he's going to.
[Morris:] With me, it's my brain.
[Robyn:] Who said it was benign? Oh, uh...returning to death, again. Uh, this is about somebody who's, uh...some person who's passing away. And they're, they're looking back at the time when, a, a singer that they heard when they were young. And the woman's name is, is Vera Lynn. She was called, "The Forces' Sweetheart." Nicknamed "The Forces' Sweetheart," in the war. And a lot of men, went to their deaths --you know, they were incinerated, or blown to bits, or drowned-- with a little photo of Vera by their side. Much as today you might have, if you were in a similar situation, a phtograph of Nine Inch Nails or Nirvana. Or whatever else you got the hots for. And, so, if you'd like to imagine that when you're dying in, um...what y'all got, about fifty years? About that? Or the Indigo Girls, yeah, that's true. You can choose the Indigo Girls, Nine Inch Nails, or Nirvana. Any one of these three. One of them may have cancer, but that's not our fault.
[Andy:] None of them is cool.
[Robyn:] Of course they're not cool! You can't choose cool. And, and uh, you, can you imagine you're in a similar state in fifty years' time? And you're dying, and you keep getting these flashbacks of...things that you liked. That weren't cool when they were popular. Uh, that's the situation that this, this old guy is in as he's passing away. And it's, you know, it's a song. Uh, and it sounds like it's called something, but that isn't the actual title of it. One! Two! Three! Four

3/1/92 Coach House, San Juan Capistrano [16th song]
Uh, I gotta, uh, I gotta explain this, just because...it fits the concepts, hang on a minute. Um...originally, uh, this is a, this songs mentions a, a female singer who's a, a popular star in Britain during the war. She was called Vera Lynn, aka "The Forces' Sweetheart." And, uh, I mean, yeah, it wasn't like she was a wrestler, or something, and then billed: "The Forces' Sweetheart versing...versus the Nazi...Nazi Nubile," or anything. I mean it was just that she was, uh, popular. And a lot of people died with a photograph of her by her as they went blazing to their death in tailguns and in...submarines, and were blown to bits and bombshells and somewhere miles from anyone they ever knew. And torn to pieces by steel harpoons. Giant winged claws ripped their entrails out, and then set it from the very corner of their bowels. And pulled their spines out and waved them around, and smashed their heads on the telephone trap. And their eyeballs rolled under the skirting. And even the mice couldn't get hold of them, because the mice had been incinerated in the fires, or revealed by x-ray beams, which would be... The mice were pathetic. I mean, you wouldn't even fry them. You'd give them to a fat Chinese cook who couldn't care less, 'cause there weren't any of us with a day off anyway. And then, the Americans came in, and more Americans got killed. And they paid for other people to get killed, including the Japanese. And meanwhile, old vera Lynn just kept singing, "There'll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover." And, uh, We're In League Again, which incidentally was recorded by the Byrds, though I'll bet they didn't sing that one when they came here. And, uh, whether McGuinn's ever met Vera is a good point. But, uh, I'm mentioning now that this is up to date. And there's somebody who wasn't destroyed in that way in the war, but they're passing away now. And they're having these delirious visions of this singer that they saw. but, you know, they might not have been that big a fan of Vera. They might've been a fan of, uh, Glen Miller, or somebody like that. So, imagine if you...say you liked, uh...say you were an R.E.M. fan, but, but you keep hearing...no, only one of you is an R.E.M. fan. But, uh, you know, you're passing away, and you keep getting all these visions of Nine Inch Nails, or something primal. So, uh, just imagine that instead of Vera Lynn, if you like. And when we're going, uh, "Nin nin n-nin nin nin," it's not a reference to Anais Nin, the great, uh, sensualist of the early '20's, but in fact to Nine Inch Nails. And this...starts like this. One! Two! Three! Four!

Uh, this one's about an old person dying, and recollecting, uh...something that they liked when they were young. So if you imagine...that whatever it was you really liked when you were young, like, uh, LaToya Jackson, or, or Meg Ryan, or uh, you know, someone you, you really idolized, like Vanilla Ice. Someone who's very important. And, you know, they're up there, and uh, you expect that when you're dying, you know, you rec-- you flash on this old stuff. This person's just having a vision of a, a pop singer in Great Britain in the war called Vera Lynn, who was also known as, "The Forces' Sweetheart," and uh, it's...just goes like this. It's very simple. One! Two! Three! Four!

6/29/92 Tiptitina's, New Orleans [12th song]
Thanks, we'll leave you with this, which is about a, an old person, uh dying, remembering a, a hero or heroine of their youth. It was a woman whose name was Vera Lynn, and her subtitle was: "The Forces' Sweetheart." And all these people in the '40s, they looked to Vera to give 'em courage, as they first, faced death. And the ones that didn't die in the war, some of them are dying now, a-and have been dying for a while. And they might have Vera on their minds as...they pass away. You think, "Yeah, well, so what?" But...you imagine if someone you really idolized, like Leonard Nimoy, or...Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, or...Rod Stewart. If one of those people that matter to you now, you know, or Bob Weir, was to pass away, you might feel the same kind of thing. Uh, so this it goes, we'll leave you with this. It's called Yip. Not too fast. One! Two! Three! Four!

7/10/92 Coach House, San Juan Capistrano [12th song]
Um, alright, we'll do this song. Oh yeah, I introduced this one last time. In fact, I don't even think I did it here. I introduced it in L.A., uh, the time before last we played here. So you'll recognize it when you...or whenever the next record comes out if it's on there. Um, but anyway, it's to do with, uh, Nine Inch Nails, and, uh, various forms of entertainment. And the Air Force. The Air Force, and old performers, and, uh, dying people. And rushing out and giving them transfusions, and useless operations that prolong their lives by a few weeks so they can die in slower and greater agony with more loved ones around. And, you'll all be able to relate to this: I'm proud to be on the same stage where David Crosby stood. I've said it. There. [...] Okay, this is for...the newly dead. One! Two! Three! Four!

Album version [intoduction from SPECTRE] [1st song]
Yeah, we did have a small dog, many years ago. My, girlfriend at the time had a, a small dog. And in fact, her mother had another small dog, a bit later. And, um, I used to say, "Yip," to the dog a lot. The dog used to yip when it wanted to go in or out. And we had another one that used to yip if it went, wanted to go up or down. You know, it would come up three flights of stairs, and it would yip at the top of the stairs, 'cause it wanted to get back down again. It was called, "Yipper." That's pretty much what that song came from, was actually small dogs. But it's not about small dogs. It's about, actually, people consenting to a useless operation designed to prolong someone's life for an extra few weeks, while they in their delirium, imagine this woman, Vera Lynn, who was the, the "Forces' Sweetheart." She was like the Axl Rose of her day, you know? And he, he's sort of trying to call out to this image, to...in his, in his pain, as he's passing away, being destroyed by something. And all these voices are, are kind of saying, "Yeah. Surgery would be a good idea. Yip. Yip. Yip. Yip. Yip." But, you know, originally the song actually was nothing to do with that at all. It was, "Vera Lynn, Vera Lynn, she played punk rock with her fin." And I imagined Vera Lynn as having this enormous great...black, kind of shark's fin on her back...that she, used it to strum...a sort of Les Paul guitar. As if she was cleaning her back with a guitar, in the bathtub. Just stroking this guitar back and forth across her fin. And, uh, somehow all these kind of, punk-y chords would be coming out.

This introduction, from 12/29/92, perhaps Tobyn's first solo performance of the song, occurred after the album was recorded, so I didn't include it in the main section. But it's quite interesting nonetheless, so I've included it here.
The lyrics of this late '93 solo radio performance conform quite closely to the album version, until the very end, where he spins out of control.
After which, I've included an "aggregation", to illustrate just how jumpy the lyricplacements were in those early days.

12/29/92 9:30 Club, Washington [13th song]
Oh, thanks. I'll leave you with this, which I always have to do the same introduction to. Which means eventually there's gonna really start as this tune will. Uh, which is that it involved, it involves somebody who's, uh, about 70 or so, and who's dying. And they're recalling someone that they've had as a pinup during the war, on the wall of their tank. And, their, you know, their tank had been shot up, and they personally hadn't been killed. And, uh, they knew all sort of people who had the same photograph. It wasn't, a, you know, a kind of nude. Or, like a World War II version of a nude. 'cause, you know, nobody had pubic hair until about 1966. Which was a tremendous shock to the Rolling Stones when they finally drew it on their third tour. And, uh...and to me, even though I wasn't really with them. But i could feel for them. Pretty scary, having that kind of empathy. Especially when you start feeling it toward Keith, man. And, uh...the result of it was...I mean, this old geezer/man/person is, uh...is dying. And he's recalling, he's trying to call upon this person. She's called Vera Lynn aka "The Forces' Sweetheart." She's about 70 or something now. She still does gigs for disabled British airmen. And she's very sweet and unblemished, and they don't really have people like that now, but she's still there. And, uh, he's, in his delirium he's kind of reaching to the wall of the turret in his tank. And he can see that the green skulls of his old comrades saying, "You're coming to join us, boy!" You know, and the rest of it: "Come on, Sarge! It's nice in Hell," and all the rest of it. And, uh, he's going, "No! No! No!" You now? "I've had a fairly good life." And he goes off into a big, sort of tick-- as you know, when you die, your whole life is sort of punched out on a ticker-tape display, and you have to quickly review whether you want to: yes or no? Now it's on computer. So you ask for the menu: you say, "What happened August the 23rd, 1977? Oh, Hell. Blank you. I never want to see that. At least can I be photographed in the buff doing that kind of thing?" And, you know, "I don't want to watch this in my death, 'cause I never have done it. Jesus, did I spend that much time on the toilet?" Et cetera, et cetera. And, uh, anyway this old geezer is sort of winding through his life. And he's trying to reach out to Vera, and he can't...tipped hand goes throught the wall of the tank, and he's...there, he can't find her, so... So you say, "Well, so what?" But, I mean, you know, about how long do you wanna live? Maybe three weeks, or, 25 years, or whatever. But, you know, when your time comes, and, uh, you're thinking to someone important to you, like maybe Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, or something, uh, the same fate could await you. But hope not. Uh, you really oughta imagine Andy and Morris on this one. And they're really good, especially on the record. Uh, which they actually recorded it without me, on the backing track. It's fantastic. If you listen very closely you can hear me going, "Yeah! All Right!" at the end. I was, we recorded it in my living room, and I was in the kitchen. And, uh, I was allowed on a lot of the record, huh! You know? It's, I mean, it's, I mean there's no faking or anything. They just felt they would do the backing track better without me. So I'm just singing the lead vocal, here, without them. There's no...excitement. But, the, I think the record has all three of us beautifully mixed. Uh, the guy tried to make it sound like a sack of coal when he mixed it. But sadly...it was gonna be really thin and horrible, but, um, Andy said that would be a bad idea. And so, it sounds a bit nicer. But the original mix is absolutely ghastly. I mean it...so I'm gonna try and sound like the original mix. I'm gonna sing along with myself. mmmm...one...two...why the Hell do I count it in if I'm the only one playing? Because I've got no sense of rhythm! So I was gonna try and not listen to myself, hang on, there we go...uh...oh. "Do I want to count it in?" "What, are you trying to do a show, here?" "I dunno, I'm asking you. Are you gonna split the money?" "Money?" "Money." "Money." Suddenly they were as one. One! Two! Three! Four!
