Oscar Winner Bills Rock Robyn
by Patricia Thompson
Top filmmaker Jonathan Demme has chosen former Winchester Rock star Robyn Hitchcock as the subject of his latest work.
The director of Oscar winners Philadelphia and Silence Of The Lambs has just completed filming the two-hour-long account of the work of the former Winchester College student.
Demme has already made internationally acclaimed films about other top Rock names including Talking Heads.
Robyn Hitchcock, whose mother Joyce Hitchcock owns an art and craft gallery at Alresford, has achieved legendary status during a 20-year career in the music business.
His father was the late best-selling author Raymond Hitchcock and he grew up in Abbotts Worthy before achieving cult fame with The Soft Boys at the height of 1970s' New Wave.
He went onto a solo career before teaming up with former Soft Boys colleagues to release a string of highly-praised albums as Robyn Hitchcock And The Egyptians.
He now divides his time between London and America, and critics rave about his "eccentric lyrical" music.
His mother flew to New York to watch some of the filming of the feature which is due for release in the autumn.
She said: "Robyn wanted us to be there, and it was great fun. Most of the film is of Robyn in concert. I can't wait to see it."
