Robyn Hitchcock
Moss Elixir
by Jeff McCulley
Like any number of ripe cheeses and most foreign movies, Robyn Hitchcock is an acquired taste. He'll never shed his cult status because he loves it, even though he has moments -- such as this album's "Alright, Yeah" -- when his Pop instincts overwhelm his inaccessibility. If he ever makes a whole record like that, look out: your radio's going to be exploding with songs about fish and amphibians. Until that unlikely time, Hitchcock's fans can look forward to one album a year (with his Egyptians, or as in this case, without) of great 12-string guitar and lyrics a shade less comprehensible than The Beatles' "I Am The Walrus". And everybody else can keep ignoring him.
