Robyn Hitchcock's Moss Elixir is a sweet mix of Britpop goo and solo-artist strength.
Here, the former Soft Boy and Egyptian leader waxes eloquent about love, relationships, and sharing oblivion over a glass of wine. Big horns, delicate strings, and bouncy guitars highlight the overall message of creative reclamation -- and its opposite, selfish depression.
A little too soft at times, Hitchcock's melodies tend to suffer under the weight of unchanging tempos and boring progressions. His articulate guitar-playing, fortunately, rescues the casualties from complete write-offs, and a cameo from Morris Tepper is an added bonus.
