Demme Eyes Rockumentary On Hitchcock
by Jeffrey Jolson-Colburn
Jonathan Demme may return to the world of music with a film about cult rocker Robyn Hitchcock, sources said. Demme, who made the Talking Heads feature Stop
Making Sense as well as the Oscar-winning The Silence Of The Lambs
and Philadelphia, is reportedly still in the financing phase for the feature-length concert rockumentary. Plans are to go before cameras in New York right before Hitchcock's tour at the end of the year. Soundtrack honors would go to Warner Bros. Records, marking the second WB disc for the British singer-songwriter. Hitchcock has never been a big seller in The United States, but he has an active underground fanbase and has influenced numerous Alternative acts. A&M Records, for whom he used to record with his former band The Egyptians, has just released a greatest hits album. He has more than 15 albums out -- most critically acclaimed, though Globe Of Frogs, Eye, and Element Of Light are standouts.
