Hitchcock Opts For Direct Approach

by Bill Eichenberger

Robyn Hitchcock described 1992's Perspex Island as "our Beatles album."

He describes the recently released Respect somewhat differently in his A&M Records bio: "Undisguised Folk truths drawn from decades of campfire wisdom; nurtured on a diet of The Band, The Beach Boys, or Billy Bragg."

Hitchcock and his backing group, The Egyptians, will perform to promote Respect tonight in the Newport Music Hall, 1722 N. High St. Doors open at 7 p.m..

Respect is not as heavily produced as Perspex Island. The basic tracks were recorded live in Hitchcock's kitchen.

The lyrics, too, are more direct. Hitchcock dispenses with what he calls "the screen of words" for lyrics such as these from Railway Shoes: "Madam, I burn for you night and day".
