Nigel And The Crosses: The Bootleg
by Jon Storey
Well...Nigel And The Crosses. It seems a long time ago that the masquerading reprobates who misappropriated our founder's name appeared at London's Borderline for a 90-minute orgy of fun and frolic. In fact it was less than a year -- Sunday, May 28th, 1989, to be precise. It was the band's second appearance, and their last -- for the moment, at least. The true identity of the artists themselves must remain shrouded in mystery -- unless you care to look back to issue 30, for the full story (or as much of it as we are able to reveal!).
Anyhow, via a secret ex-directory phone number, I communicated with someone purporting to be a member of the band -- maybe big Nige himself? Nige told me he'd managed to score a dodgy tape of the gig while rooting around in an inner-city street-market. But alas, the recording was naff. "Never mind," I said, "I've heard a great one! Howsabout we put a couple of the best tracks on one of our freebies? The readers that couldn't get down to the gig will love it." "Fine by me," said Nige, "but I'll have to check it out with the lads." And he did.
"Queen Of Eyes" and "Foxy Lady" are the tracks we've immortalised in vinyl from that splendid evening's entertainment. The songs were recorded under extreme circumstances by Pete Jackson, Mobile Sound Services, and while not exactly "hi-fi", the tapes have been tenderly remastered, and carefully transferred, for maximum listening enjoyment. You won't get no better, guv. Honest! Hope you like it.
Our eternal thanks are due to Robyn for taking so much trouble in arranging clearance on the material with the record labels in question; to Nigel And The Crosses (including one Robyn, two Peters, Glenn, Bill, Andy, Morris, Mike, and Dave) for the music; and to Pete Jackson for his sterling work. Cheers, mates. We couldn't have done it without you.
