The road is fine (i.e., not bumpy) for the entirety of its length; which ends at about 6,700 feet. Here awaits those wishing to summit the trailhead for the multi-day trek.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The view from here is great, of course. But also there\u2019s a fairly profound feeling of serenity at that height (and surround by trees, rather that lava) \u2013 the breeze and the birds are the only sounds to be heard.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-399\" href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/?attachment_id=399\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-399\" title=\"maunaloa\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaloa1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaloa1.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaloa1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaloa1-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking of birds, next stop, a coupla thirds of the way back down the road, was Bird Park. It\u2019s a short but sublime one-mile hike through a kipuka (a forested area, so I\u2019ve just learned, saved from lava flows owing to its being atop a mound). The birds are out in force, as advertised; and the trees typically beautiful.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Near the bottom of the hill is an area of Tree Molds. These are created when very wet trees withstand the lava\u2019s ire long enough for it (the lava) to begin to harden before they (the trees) give way to incineration. The result is fascinating!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-402\" href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/?attachment_id=402\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-402\" title=\"treemold\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/treemold.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3072\" height=\"2304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/treemold.jpg 3072w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/treemold-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/treemold-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3072px) 100vw, 3072px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By the way, don&#8217;t you wish you could write like this?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-403\" href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/?attachment_id=403\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-403\" title=\"write\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/write.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/write.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/write-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/write-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moving right along, a kinda long-ish hike covering the immediate area surrounding the 1969-1974 eruptions at Mauna Ulu. Here\u2019s where it all began.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-404\" href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/?attachment_id=404\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-404\" title=\"maunaulu\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaulu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaulu.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaulu-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/maunaulu-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The area here is just absolutely <em>ca-razy<\/em>. Must be seen to be believed. The hike continues to the top of the Puu Huluhulu, which serves as a nice viewpoint for Mauna Ulu itself. Pretty interesting times, if you wanna <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/planyourvisit\/loader.cfm?csModule=security\/getfile&amp;PageID=296306\">read<\/a> up on it (the link is to the .pdf for the trail guide).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hike also features many lava trees \u2013 similar to tree molds; but instead of forming pits, the lava forms into the shape of the trees. Way cool (just trying to use some different adjectives here \u2013 everything in the park could be described using the most magnitudinous of superlatives).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-407\" href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/?attachment_id=407\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-407\" title=\"lavatree\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/lavatree.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/lavatree.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/lavatree-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/lavatree-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Up, now, to the Crater Rim Drive to look at the Art Gallery, visit the Museum, check in upon the Steam Vents and Sulfur Banks, and pay the last respects to the Halemaumau crater.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thence to charge back down the Chain Of Craters Road, to the very end of it all. Three Nene feeding by the side of the road.
