Located about seven miles south of town, this Angkor-era temple set on a hilltop (phnom) doesn&#8217;t receive much notice.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Apparently very small, and, according to the guidebook, worth the visit more for the surroundings than for the temple itself. \u201cVery small, eh?\u201d I reasoned, \u201cSurely the <em>can\u2019t<\/em> be checking tickets at this location,\u201d as they had been at the Roluos temples.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Pretty okay ride, not much traffic. Passed a <em>mosque<\/em> on the way down there, if you would believe it. Dunno why it\u2019s stuck out in the boondocks here? Perhaps the rents are more affordable.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mosque.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"mosque\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/mosque_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"mosque\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Arriving to Phnom Krom before 8:00 in the morning, it was already broiling hot (well\u2026okay, maybe only <em>baking<\/em> hot; didn\u2019t get to broiling \u2018til later), and there were a lot of steps to climb up.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/stairs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"stairs\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/stairs_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"stairs\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">But I achieved the top of the stairway, and, la-di-da, all set to continue on up the path to the top; and all of the suddenly: ticket-checker man! Dammit! Lucky thing those damned Khmers never put up a temple at the bottom of the ocean, or the ticket-checkers\u2019d be sited <em>there<\/em> as well.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Thus ended my tour of Phnom Krom. Oh, well; the view from here was pretty nice.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/view.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"view\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/view_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"view\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Riding back into town, I stopped at a modern temple just the other side of the river. Who\u2019d have guessed that a temple set in a small little village area would turn out to be possibly the Great Poobah of them all? Well, ask or no, the fun had only just begun. The murals of the secondary temple (really ought to do a little bit of study to learn the proper terminology of these places) are just so knock-your-socks-off terrifico! The craftsmanship isn\u2019t <em>quite<\/em> up to the level of the Bakong temple \u2013 but it\u2019s close; and there are <em>so many<\/em> of them, touching such a wide variety of topics.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">What a sight!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"murals1\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"murals1\" width=\"644\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">I really like that so many of them prominently feature different animals from the same we\u2019re used to seeing. Here, for example, a beautiful goat.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"murals2\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals2_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"murals2\" width=\"644\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In many of the scenarios, as well, birds on the wing have been placed into the background; a welcomed touch.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"murals5\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals5_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"murals5\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Some pretty good laughs in here too. I mean, probably there\u2019s something I\u2019m missing in these, not knowing the Buddhist iconography nor the stories being depicted. But, taken out of context, a skeleton sitting in at worship ceremony\u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"murals4\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals4_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"murals4\" width=\"644\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u2026and a levitating monk flashing the devil-horns symbol (and right in the Big Guy\u2019s presence, no less!)\u2026<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"murals6\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/murals6_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"murals6\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026is some knee-slapping goodness!<\/p>\n<p>Moving on to the (gorgeous) office building\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/office.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"office\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/office_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"office\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026a somewhat freaky mountain composed of melted-off candle-wax.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/candle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"candle\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/candle_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"candle\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Okay, <em>now<\/em>, on to the main temple. The outdoor three-D murals, some of \u2018em, have this kind of washed\/faded effect. Pretty together.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main1\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main1\" width=\"644\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">But check how high the ceiling is. Dang.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main2\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main2_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main2\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Inside, the murals are somehow not quite as thrilling as those in the secondary temple\u2026oh, hang on\u2026okay, just had a look at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiang-rai.biz\/activities\/chiang-rai-temples\/temple-glossary\">site<\/a>; and I do believe that what I\u2019ve been calling the \u201csecondary temple\u201d lo these months is in point of fact the Ordination Hall. So, anyways, they not <em>quite<\/em> as great, but they\u2019re still pretty great.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A fair amount of space is given over to monk portraiture. Famous monks in Cambodian history, p\u2019rhaps?<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main3\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main3_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main3\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Interestingly, one of these is a faceless monk. \u201cEverymonk\u201d, maybe; the monk inside us all. (Well factually, I must confess: a life of asceticism on the grounds of some of these beautiful spaces has its allure. At the end of the day, though, I don\u2019t think I could handle the religion bullshit.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main4\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main4_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main4\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The height of the ceiling makes for some rather tall murals; not to mention, well, it\u2019s just kinda cool craning one\u2019s neck to see all the way up there.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main5\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main5_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main5\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Those columns are kickass, too; their height, along with the interplay of the light from outside, gives the place some kind of a weird forest feeling.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main6\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main6_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main6\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Acoustics are pretty great in here, yeah. Believe (or don\u2019t, your choice) that it\u2019s only these two novices making all this racket. These two pilgrims received quite the lengthy session, by the way. I don\u2019t know if they\u2019d made a huge donation, or what; but usually, one drops some money in the pot, and in return receives about a minute\u2019s worth of blessing. This one was going on for a good twenty minutes, at the least.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"justify\">\n<div style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\">\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Siem Reap Chanting\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;\"  src=\"https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/photos\/6903178034\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Sometimes it pays to look closely. What\u2019s that damned elephant doing in the middle of the sun!? The artist going for some surrealism, or a depiction of a Buddhist legend, or\u2026? Hells if <em>I<\/em> can say. I only know that this place lays a whipping on the llama\u2019s ass!<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main7\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main7_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main7\" width=\"644\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Right. Out the back, there\u2019s a nice, huge, garden o\u2019 stupa. These Cambodians sure do love them some stupa, I must say.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main8\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main8_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main8\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And what\u2019s that atop the poles? You know it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"main9\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/main9_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"main9\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The back gate is one of the more beautiful structures what\u2019ll ever be seen by one\u2019s own two eyeballs. Bummer the noontime light made the photographs kinda dogcrap. Here\u2019s a okay one.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/back1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"back1\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/back1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"back1\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a little moat with a nice shrine inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/back2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"back2\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/back2_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"back2\" width=\"323\" height=\"484\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Also some awesome boats and stuff back here. (I\u2019m telling you, they crammed everything they could think of into this place.)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/back3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"back3\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/back3_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"back3\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">A nice young gentleman name of \u201cDeth\u201d rode up and told me some true facts (e.g., the temple\u2019s only three or four years old), in addition to asking many questions. He works at a guest house in town; said he wants to \u201cmake friends\u201d with me so\u2019s he can practice his English. I said sure, and gave my my e-mail address. Pagodas, and shrines, and a big hall, plus a fire-pit. (Although, from reading the website linked above &#8212; and pace what that dude\u2019d said about having seen a \u201cbarbeque\u201d in that one in town I told about before \u2013 this last could in fact be used for crematory works; and thus this whole area may be a funeral grounds.)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/pagoda1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pagoda1\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/pagoda1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"pagoda1\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">There are only a few murals in the activity centre, flanking the shrine; but they\u2019re pretty beautiful indeed.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/pagoda2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"pagoda2\" src=\"http:\/\/durianapocalypse.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/pagoda2_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"pagoda2\" width=\"644\" height=\"429\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">One of the shrines near the entrance has that same, weird look of some others in town\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Novice to Monk: <\/strong>Oh shit! This is, I believe, one of my three favourite Buddhist joints to-date; along with Phan Phao in Luang Prabang and Tang Yu in Chiang Mai. Doesn\u2019t have the \u201cauthentic\u201d feel of the temples in those towns; but it\u2019s got its own personality just the same. I quite love its \u201ccollage\u201d feeling.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Shit, I couldn\u2019t even see its name printed anywhere in Latin alphabet, and it damned sure ain\u2019t on the map. Suffice to say, I liked it well enough; but not nearly so much as the first one. It\u2019s at a temple between town and the Park. I kept riding past it, thinking, \u201cOh, I gotta stop in here one of these times.\u201d But it seemed like there was never enough daylight left to <em>both<\/em> stop in there and get back into town before dark.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">But the other day, there was. It\u2019s okay, the temple; actually falls rather short of the standards set by the others in (and south of) town.
